Emelle - town in the district of Sumter, Alabama, United States. It was named after the daughters of the man who donated land for the city. The town was started in the 19th century, but not united until the 1980s. Daughters of the person who donated, called Emma and Ella Diel Diel, so he combined the two names to create Emelle. Emelle was known for their high cotton. The first mayor was James Daly Emelle. He served two terms. Current Mayor - Roy Villinghem Sir, the population was only 31 at the 2000 census. The city is known that it was the site of the largest hazardous waste landfills in the United States, operated by Waste Management, Inc. That treatment plant hazardous waste has been the subject of the case, who decides on the U.S. Supreme Court, Chemical Waste Management, Inc. v. Hunt, 504 U.S. 334 (1992).
