Pevek (Russian: Pevek), city and port in the Arctic Region Chaunsky,
Pevek (Russian: Pevek), city and port in the Arctic Region Chaunsky, part of the Autonomous Okrug Chukotka, Russia. After the Anadyr and Bilibino it - the third largest city in Chukotka. Population: 5206 (2002 census), 12 915 (census 1989). Municipally, the city is subject to the Municipal District and Chaunsky with Apapelgino and Yanranay, is included as an Urban Settlement of Pevek. City - a modern settlement, established after World War I, which will provide a port for mineral exports as part of expanding the Northern Sea Route. During the 1940s and 1950s, the surrounding area was the site of several Pevek gulag where prisoners mined uranium. In recent years, although many mines have been shown to be uneconomical and were closed, forcing many residents to move to more central regions of Russia and for the port's infrastructure to disintegrate.
